The global climate is warming due to increased atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases. Carbon dioxide is released through the burning of fossil fuels (oil, coal and gas) used in generating electricity, heating and transportation.

The consequences of climate change are serious. Rising sea levels caused by melting polar ice will cause some low-lying countries to disappear. Other regions may experience increased frequency of drought, flooding and extremes of heat and cold. There will be serious impacts on the habitability of many areas, on human health and the ability to grow crops.
