Loire Valley

markets

A region known for living well of the land is expected to have outstanding markets, and Loire Valley will not let destination cooks down. There are many small affairs in local towns, but our favourites are:

  • The market in Amboise, just 13 miles from Domaine de Dugny, is one of the biggest in the region.
The stall owners set up on Friday and Sunday mornings but the early start is worth it for Destination Cooks.

  • The Friday market has
30 to 70 traders and sells predominantly food and regional delicacies.
On Sunday morning, there 150 to 200 stalls selling even more varieties of local wine, cheese, meat, fruit, vegetables, honey, fish, oysters and a whole variety of locally produced extras – an event that can’t be missed by budding Destination Cooks.

  • Tours, about 30 miles from Domaine de Dugny, is known as the city of 30 street markets.
First stop for Destination Cooks is the excellent covered food market on Place des Halles, with additional produce on the square outside on Wednesday and Saturday mornings.
If you want to be really specialised, there’s a gourmet market that takes place on the first Friday of every month, from 4pm to 10pm, and the Foire à l’Ail et au Basilic, a garlic & basil fair, at Sainte Anne at the end of July.
