Food and fish markets are common throughout Brittany and so here’s our siblu guide to the best of them for Destination Cooking. Arrive early for your pick of the freshest products, or find a seat in the sun at a nearby café and watch the action unfold.

 


 

Okay, maybe we’re asking a bit too much, but if you can stomach a really early start on your holiday (we’re talking around 6-6h30am), then a visit to one of the many fish markets is a must.

If you want to get truly involved find out more about our Breton Food and Nature course, but if you’re content to watch the action, there’s a catch of markets to choose from.

The fun is in watching buyers gather round the mountains of fish displayed in boxes on the quayside, to be sold through auction as shop owners and restaurateurs battle for the prizes.

The auctioneer is an expert at ringing out bids from the crowd, so keep an eye out for the gestures and nods as a new price is proposed and a sale is closed.

    Roscoff, if you’re travelling on the Plymouth ferry, the fish auctions take place daily at the ferry port.
